Its nearly the end of the year. I'm adding another notch in my age. Does time really fly so fast, or does it just seem so. I recall the day can be really long when I was younger. The house bigger, the distance further, the foods tastier. And of course I remember when I was much slimmer, the tummy tighter, the complexion smoother, the boobs perkier.
As I cross the 40s, I guess I would have already spent 2/3 of my life. God willing insyaallah. With another 20 years ahead, hopefully in good health, my wish is for Adam, Ain and Lily to become productive adults. I want my existence to matter. In the meantime, I'm happy being me, fats, wrinkle, grey hairs and all.

Purging of the soul
|
|
Last week was Eid. It is the time for celebrating and family reunions. The family headed back to Ipoh to Opah's house and made the rounds visiting relatives in Parit. We also went south to my home town, Kluang and visited relatives in Mersing and Kg Janglau near Rompin Pahang. It was hectic but Eid is the time where you make that extra effort to visit your elders seeking for blessing and forgiveness.
A few days before Eid, our late parents' house in Kluang was broken into. The house has been left unoccupied for more than a year. The thieves made off with all the metal items which included cookware, antique brassware, sword, keris, parangs, 3 TV sets and a motorbike. The house was left in shambles. It was a rude wake up call. It was hard to `clean up' the house our late parents spent a greater part of their life in. Everything reminded us of them. Every item tells a story. Clean up we did though. Each of us taking a few personal items to remind us of `home'. These material possessions however valuable could never be comparable to the precious memories we had of mak and bak.

As a city dweller, I never expected my house to be nature-friendly. Of course, you do your bid in planting a few plants in what you hope to grow into lush garden. A vision of balinisque splendor in mind. It is with enthusiasm and a great degree of envy towards the neighbor's well manicured lawn, nicely placed potted plants and flowering shrubs that I start my gardening projects. The plants chosen were hardy ones able to withstand neglect. Well, envy is one of the greater sins. No good comes to the sinner and as expected, my enthusiasm dampened and the project gets abandoned. Nevertheless the plants grow, the flowers bloom tho' sporadically and creatures big and small regularly visit my garden. I get excited at seeing the millipedes, the beetles, bees and birds. I now just have to be carefull that I dont let my garden become too nature friendly to invite the snakes too.

Through Lily's eyes
|
|
Lily is my youngest child. At 9 she is still young enough to want to tag along wherever I go. Her sister Ain is 14, has her own set of friends, with distinct preferences that sometimes goes opposite to what I prefer. Adam is in boarding school. We try to see him as often as we can but at 16, he's becoming a young man and its not cool to tag along your parents. Lily is at an age where mom is still the greatest person on earth. She loves animals but hates cockroaches, a bit of a tomboy and rather competitive in nature. A very very affectionate child.
These pictures are taken by her, a hobby she's sharing with me. I must say she does have the knack. I like her photographs...but then again, I'm biased.

`Madame jealousy' - do you expire?
|
|
|
Do people has expiry date? Are we good for certain things only in certain parts of our lives? I have ponder on this for quite a while now. Yes, we expire for good one day, thats without doubt. But what about in between? When do we cease to be a loyal friend, a faithful spouse, a caring mother, a useful employee, a significant human being. When someone says so? When you say so? When you feel so?

There were lots of things going on for Lily lately. She practiced hard for her Sri Bestari Idol Competition held in conjunction with the school carnival day. She sang `A whole new world'. I was proud of her though it was at that time I found out the videocam can't record. .
2 weeks later, today, she was in the Sri Bestari Swimming Gala. She took 2 events and won one. I had so much to do at the office but I do not have the heart to miss the event. It's another milestone in her school years. She was so proud of herself and I do not want to disappoint her. I came just in time for her events but had to wait a bit for the prize giving. To make up for time off, I forego the long friday lunch break.
Work is important and I strive to give the best. But my child wanted me to share her childhood and childhood doesn't wait for you.

The office was in raucuos this morning. A bird, a burung punai, flew against the glass window. It fell on the ledge unmoving shocked from the impact. Zaki, our young office assistant climbed up on the ledge and carried the bird in. It was pitiful with feathers ripped off from the forceful collision. With patience, we managed to revive it and set it free.
This says so much about false perception and fragility of time. One minute you are safe, free, alive and in your environment. The next minute, bang! you could be dead, like the small humming bird we saw dead on the ledge. It must be another victim too. There has been too many stories about accidents in the newspapers recently. I'm saddened by the lost of young lives with so much hope and pride pinned on them by all who loved them. Innalillah....
The bird was lucky despite being unlucky. It managed to see another day.

It was another rugby weekend. I dragged along Ain and Lily to the game. As usual I was the unofficial caterer to the SAS Rugby Team. Lucky thing that SAS is so near to Alamanda that ferrying food stuff was no problem. Plus you have the mega store Carrefour to cater for all your needs. (Adam tore his tights and had to get new ones). SESMA of Terengganu was in their usual superb form. But I must confess I was highly impressed with Sek Men Keb Yahya Petra of Kuala Krai. It must be the east coast air that does something to the boys that made them play good rugby.
Should I take pride in being the only makcik there? . I was happy to bask in the exuberance of youth and teenage enthusiasm. The boys were spirited but respectful and polite to this makcik. A group of boys from SDAR stuttered as to how to address me. Cikgu? kakak? Datin? Makcik! I assured them as I took their group photograph. Seeing all these boys, I share in the pride of being a mother to one. Your mothers must be proud of you too. Towards the end of the day, Adam and his team mates won the gold plate. And in true SAS tradition (as assured to me when I complained the boys looked `selekeh') received their medals in shorts and slippers; with Adam even having a different T'shirt on. sigh!
